Consultations with Practice Nurses
The Practice Nurse can carry out detailed checks and advise on the treatment of several medical conditions. Appointments are usually longer than 10 minutes, depending on the problem.
Diabetes Annual Examinations:you should bring a record of your home blood glucose measurements and a sample of urine passed first thing in the morning.
Asthma Reviews:These are usually six-monthly. Please bring your inhalers so that your inhaler technique can be checked. Asthma causes much suffering, hospital admissions and even deaths, all of which are preventable with modern treatments. Telephone reviews may be suitable for some patients.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (what used to be called chronic bronchitis). The Practice Nurses carry out diagnostic testing and annual monitoring of lung function by spirometry. Please bring your inhalers to check your technique and obtain letter about spirometry from reception when you make the appointment.
Blood pressure monitoring-you can have blood pressure reviews by the Nurse.
The Nurses also take cervical smears, carry out checks for the contraceptive pill and give contraceptive depot injections.
Travel advice and vaccinations:please make an appointment at least 8 weeks before your holiday if you require vaccinations. We keep several vaccines in stock. Please note that antimalarial medication and some vaccines are not prescribable on the NHS and you will be charged for these services.
Immunisations: Childhood immunisation and immunisation against influenza and pneumonia of patients over 65 or who suffer from a number of chronic medical conditions are carried out by the Nurses
